Peter Nye and the Chicago Bluegrass Band: Last Goodbye (peternye.com)

Sunnyside Up: Sunnyside Up (sunnysideupmusic.com)

These two area bands prove that Chicago can produce fine bluegrass groups not named Special Consensus. Nye and his CBB deliver a rousing set of traditional bluegrass, mixing originals with standards that showcase Nye’s strong vocals and the band’s invigorating picking. Sunnyside Up has a more dobro-centric sound, less hardcore and more informal and newgrassy than Nye and the CBB. While they lack a singer as compelling as Nye, the music is expertly played and traverses a wider stylistic range.
