I now know I don't have to worry about the vehicle occupants -- it truly is a "scene," or at least a prop for Transformers 3, currently filming in Chicago. Whew. This statuesque agricultural entity has caught my eye every weekend for the last few years as we head up and back to visit Ben. For a change, my camera was literally handy (strapped to my wrist) and it amazes me how well these new-fangled thangs can snap a pic from a car window at 74 miles per hour. This is on the east side of 94 about nine miles north of the Illinois/Wisconsin line. Actually, it's pretty slenderizing. Me via shadow on the utility pole across the street, waiting for the train downtown soon after sunrise on a Monday morning, August 26, 2011. 137026660 Misty Morning As I walk to the train, someone is already arriving at work on a chilly morning, October 5, 2010, 6:49am. 101450057 Stuck We've been lucky overall with our Cleveland commutes, but tonight we sat for 90 minutes outside Toledo thanks to an overturned semi, May 25, 2012. 156540798 Autumn in Ohio Driving around with Ben is especially nice this time of year, even on rainy days, thanks to the fall foliage. This is his street (Fairmount) a few miles east of Monarch, October 7, 2012. 167167119 Orange Diamond A rainy view from our office of Halloween-infested waters in the Daley Plaza Fountain, October 23, 2012. 168215428 AMABO ON (if seen in a rearview mirror) The depth and lucidity of his argument made me stop (only figuratively since I was going 75 mph) and wonder, "Have I been wrong all this time?" It is so hard to argue against a truck with huge dirt-graffiti. October 27, 2012. 168522821 Ready, Set... I walked out of the building at the end of the day into a throng of TV cameras pointed at a red-attired singing group and everyone waiting for the big tree lighting moment across the street in the Daley Plaza two days before Thanksgiving, November 20, 2012. 170204874 Woo Wooing Long-time Cubs superfan Ronnie "Woo Woo" Wickers moonlights at the Billy Goat Tavern, whooping it up for the Blackhawks after their victory parade, June 28, 2013. 181436192 Lawrence and Western From the formerly Ravenswood, now Brown Line elevated platform around 6:00pm Friday, July 12, 2013. 182045778 Flexible Wallmates at a store in Madison, Wisconsin, July 14, 2013. 182149510 Energy Kids running in the gym at a birthday party in Deerfield, Illinois, December, 2013. 187756824 Dells At the Kalahari in Wisconsin (in case you thought it looked like Africa), August 4, 2013. 183308491 Old Fort Sheridan Beach In Highwood along Lake Michigan, August 11, 2013. 183308490 Sun Tower From the Metra commuter train at 7:25, as the sun rises on a frigid, below-zero morning, it seems to throw a tower heavenward as we approach downtown Chicago's Union Station on Christmas Eve, 2013. 187893506 Watch Gull A winged Chicago River resident as viewed from the Washington Street Bridge at evening rush hour, September 9, 2013. 184406185 Viney Tree Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods, September 8, 2013. 184409651 Color at Sunrise Waiting for the train in Deerfield, October 15, 2013. 186568999 Odometer Two years and eight months after buying the Hyundai and taking it to and from Cleveland every other weekend, this return trip made it an even 100K on 80/90 somewhere in Ohio, November 11, 2013. 186586126 Shoe Party A snowy New Years Eve and our house was Jake's friends' home base for the night, with one of the few rules being, "Shoes come off at the door." This was the shoe rug the next morning at around 9:00 New Years Day, 2014, as the snow kept falling. 188070142 Shoes 'n' Pants on New Years A snowy New Years Eve 2013 and our house ended up being Jake's friends' home base for the night, with one of the few rules being, "Shoes off at the door." This was the shoe rug at around 9:00 New Years morning, as the snow kept falling, alongside a pair of pants getting a needed snow-wash outside the backdoor. 188096989 Not Bad Waiting Gorgeous waiting rooms are all over the place at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, November 21, 2013. 187020308 Tracks a'Fire It's 10 below zero at 7:20am and the switching points on the commuter train tracks are ablaze as the sun comes up, January 7, 2014. 188265046 Tracks a'Freezing Inside Union Station at around 4:30pm as the thermometer remains below zero during our record-shattering week, and between the rails, the ice builds, January 7, 2013. 188286542 Frigid Curls The Chicago River was frozen solid when Chicago's temperature set all kinds of frigid, nasty records this week, and with the thermometer creeping back up to zero, the water (looking west, just south of the Madison Street bridge) looks confused as to its liquid-vs-solid state, January 8, 2014, 7:30am. 188286541 Snow Ruts Thursday of the week of Chicago's record-setting nasty winter weather, and the southeast corner of Madison and Franklin offers an obstacle course for anyone wishing to cross the street, January 9, 2014. 188319743 Fixer Upper Taken at an intersection waiting for the light to change in the wilds of rural Ohio southeast of Cleveland, and I'm guessing the price is reduced, January 12, 2014. 188444871 Fish Housing Huts enclosing ice fisherpeople across from Erie, Pennsylvania on the Presque Isle bay, one of the ultimate examples of (winter weather) lemons made into lemonade, if sitting in a frigid hut looking at a string going into a hole in ice counts as lemonade, February 2, 2014. 189185394 Icy Window View Summing up the winter of 2013/14, so far anyway, February 9, 2014 189318749 Winter Winter. Winter. 'Nuff said. January 25, 2015. 197251193 Sky and Sound Heading across Puget Sound via ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island through blustery wind and steady rain, February 16, 2014. 189575438 Chihuly Mille Flori, Gallery No 5 at Chihuly Garden & Glass in Seattle, one of the few times I have seen colors in art or anywhere else that rival those found in nature (like the undersea world, for example), February 16, 2014. 189575435 Rainbow Considering its climate, I have to think Seattle residents see more rainbows than anyone else, like this one that popped out as we ferried to Bainbridge Island, February 16, 2014. 189575436 Cranes and Gull Along Seattle's waterfront from the Bainbridge Island ferry, February 16, 2014. 189575437 Marketing Along Seattle's Pike Place Market at dusk, February 16, 2014. 189576502 White Flying back from Seattle February 18, 2014 somewhere over the Dakotas, a highway cuts through the snow, and as soon as the eastbound plane had cleared Washington's Cascade Mountain range, it was white white white and more white (see the next picture)... 189658197 And More White ...and back in the Midwest, over northern Illinois, the whiteness continues during our record-smashing winter, February 18, 2014. 189658198 Birds On Ice A sort-of warm day between deep freezes brings thick fog to evening rush hour as a pair of lake-gulls surf in slow motion down the Chicago River approaching the Madison Street bridge, November 20, 2014. 189731119 Made It Light/medium rain/snow/mix all the way to Cleveland, and I'll take it any day over driving with that big, glaring fireball in the sky, March 8, 2014. 190205302 Gulls on Frozen Erie The last I heard, this particular Great Lake was ninety six percent iced over, and the birds don't seem to mind, March 9, 2014. 190242861 Aftermath A casualty of our super-sized winter outside of Jake's Beloit residence, as the snow slowly (glacially?) recedes, and we return him after a week-long "Spring" (ha ha ha!) break, March 16, 2014. 190536137 Acrobatic Lunchtime strollers seem oblivious to the acrobat practicing on the Daley Plaza, April 1, 2014. 191035257 Feeling the Spirit Rua, a Christian band from Cicero, inspires the faithful in the Daley Plaza, April 30, 2014. 191954238 PotFest Walking around Cleveland's hip Warehouse district with Ben, we asked a trio of young ladies, who were having the hardest time getting the parking meter figured out and giggling like crazy what the gathering in the park was. They hesitated, seeing that two of the three of us were, um, not too hip-looking, before saying, "A marijuana march." Our reaction seemed to put them at ease as we walked over to check out the non-marching marchers, like this band (the name of which I didn't catch, but they ARE on the CD collection, "Cardinal Herb"). Oh, and Ben was by far the least 'chill' of everybody. May 3, 2014. 192041752 Soggy on the Plaza The Daley Plaza serving as a chilly and rainy rallying spot for a community service group unfazed by the elements, Friday, May 2, 2014. 192091982 Queens and Creeks Fans of Queens of the Stone Age head west from the Aragon as fans of Nickel Creek head east from the Riviera toward the Lawrence El stop after the two very different shows adjourned simultaneously on Friday night, May 9, 2014. 192255329 Colorful Commerce Target in Cleveland, May 24, 2014. 192795459 Oh, Snap Guessing it was a pretty loud one, Ryerson Woods, June 1, 2014. 193200258 Storm Approach A Good Thing The weather for the Grant Park Orchestra concert did us a paradoxical assist. We were in the free seats behind the (paying) members' up-front section 15 minutes before "curtain" when the storm clouds burst. They took down the ropes and let us into the members' section, under the Gehry bandshell's awning, and then let everyone stay put for the ten-minute-rain-delayed concert. So, thank you, weather, for the 8th row center seat. June 28, 2014. 193726117 Grappled Glider Para-glider and handler, along the Fort Sheridan bluffs, August 10, 2014. 194655457 Highway Hookah At a rest stop along 80/90 in Ohio, the scent of cherry tobacco wafts across the parking lot as a young Middle Eastern couple take a smoke break, August 17, 2014. 194831111 Buckets Buckets Buckets Exelon Plaza in the Chicago loop prepares for what looks like an epic ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, August 20, 2014. 194850005 Bear Necessities on the Plaza Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day display on the Daley Plaza, September 12, 2014. 195288614 Sometimes A Water Tower Is Just A Water Tower At a rest-stop along 80/90 on the Ohio Turnpike, October 5, 2014. 195737545 Lot-View In Autumn Walking back to the car in the Glenview Costco parking lot as sunset approached, the light on the autumnal trees backed by landfill hill and sky provided just about the best natural beauty Chicago's suburbs can muster, October 20, 2014. 196002249 CBS At Night At 4:45 today, this was the CBS/Channel 2 building kitty corner from my office windows. As I said in another caption, one gen-u-wine perk of my Court job is having the type of office view usually afforded only by financial guys, megalawyers or similarly tax-bracketed -- 10th floor northeast corner in the middle of the Loop overlooking Daley Plaza with walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. I mean, come on. (And all the mediators have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Dearborn or Washington -- not bad.) It's especially nice when it gets dark earlier. November 6, 2014. 196270525 Three Flags on Dearborn One gen-u-wine perk of my Court job is having the type of office view usually afforded only by financial guys, megalawyers or similarly tax-bracketed -- 10th floor northeast corner in the middle of the Loop overlooking Daley Plaza with walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. I mean, come on. (And all the mediators have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Dearborn or Washington -- not bad.) It's especially nice when it gets dark earlier. At 4:45 today, these were the Daley Plaza's United States, Cook County, and Chicago flags all flying above Dearborn looking north at twilight, November 6, 2014. 196272962 Presque Ice Ice-encrusted trees on Lake Erie's Presque Isle, November 23, 2014. 196537809 Benches of Color Along the Lake Erie bluffs of Geneva by the Lake in the northeast corner of Ohio on an early winter afternoon, November 26, 2014. 196566349 Tiny Dancers Little ballerinas take their bows in the Daley Center, December 5, 2014. 196783370 Work The building where I work, taken from across the street on the 19th floor of the Daley Center, where our department was originally located when I first joined the mediation service in 1988. From there, we moved to 32 W. Randolph for a few years, then to 28 N. Clark for a few more, before landing at our current home base, 69 W. Washington, 10th Floor, Suite 1000. All four locations are visible from the Daley Plaza, straight down from this view. My own office? The left corner, seven floors up from where the windows begin. It's the one-and-a-half picture-window pains with the blinds drawn. Sunlight is overrated. December, 2014. 196917602 On Reflection The CBS windows offer an alternative view of my 69 W. Washington office building and the darker one across the street on New Years Eve, 2014. 196945657 Snow Platters A balmy and snowy warm up to the upper twenties makes these layer cake tops, or white vinyl record platters, or pancakes, or whatever term that might distract you from, Dang! It's cold outside! January 11, 2015. 197087178 Stoic A frigid dusk bothers the Picasso far less than it does the rest of us, January 8, 2015. 197087177 Andrew Patner 1959-2015 Snow dusted the Daley Plaza's Picasso February 3, 2015 as a deep chill fell on Chicago. Andrew Patner, writer, critic, broadcaster, producer, author, and true Renaissance man, beginning with the arts and extending to virtually any area worth discussing, died unexpectedly at age 55. A devastating loss. Many classical music fans, especially in Chicago, knew Andrew Patner's work, via his writing and his radio show on WFMT, among his countless other cultural and critical endeavors. All I can say is that, upon hearing the news that Andrew died unexpectedly today, I'm in shock. Besides becoming a friend, Andrew was as kind and gentle an editor as I've had for the handful of things I did for the Sun Times. This is just unbelievable to me. Reading his obit, even if you already knew much of what he did, it's hard not to be bowled over by his accomplishments -- a book published while still in his 20s, etc. etc. etc. and etc. Deepest condolences to everyone he loved and to all who loved him. Andrew Patner's biography at the Hyde Park History website: The first obituary (there will certainly be additional appreciations): Andrew's blog: 197351220 Raining on the Run The Daley Plaza on a hot and wet June day, 2012. 197422412 White on White Car in hibernation beneath a cold, white blanket, February 11, 2015. 197439471 Shadowy Shadows using my pics as props, February 17, 2015. 197514887 Ohio Icicles Cleveland's winter has been no better than Chicago's winter, February 21, 2015. 197553128 Chilly Dawn at the Station The sun is rising but you'd never know it with the post-snow clouds at the Deerfield Metra station, 6:43am, February 26, 2015. 197604586 Chillier Dawn at the Station Twenty four hours later, same time, same place, same Metra train approaching, a new day dawns, and even if the rising sun is poking through the trees this time, it's below zero at 6:43am, February 27, 2014. 197616829 Snow Pane Office door window>office window>snow at 7:45am, February 26, 2015. 197604587 Fat 'n' Bald Ohio rest-stop eagles for sale, the one in the middle appearing to be the true American bald eagle, March 13, 2015. 197795300 Totin' Gnome Same rest-stop where the Bald Eagles reside, this time on the other side of the street (the westbound side of 80/90), where Karen and her diminutive buddy non-verbally expressed the official NGA (National Gnome Association) motto: My husband, Yes; My dog, Maybe; My Garden Gnome, NEVER!
